About South Georgia: Grytviken

The Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands says the islands are reachable only by sea, with no visitor accommodation ashore, so most people come by cruise ship or yacht. All visitors are subject to the Entry Control Ordinance 2022, and vessel operators are normally IAATO members. Grytviken is the one former whaling station visitors may still walk through safely.

Why it's on our list

  • Accessible only by sea
  • Museum, church and cemetery
  • Other whaling stations are off-limits

Opening hours, prices and seasonal openings change, so please check with South Georgia: Grytviken before you go.
