About A&K Sanctuary Riverboats: the back story

Abercrombie & Kent has been running luxury Nile cruises for more than 50 years. Its A&K Sanctuary collection now includes five boats on the Nile and, since 2025, Pure Amazon in Peru, alongside its safari camps and lodges in Africa.

Half a century on the Nile

Abercrombie & Kent has been taking travellers up the Nile for more than 50 years, and its riverboats are part of A&K Sanctuary, a small collection of properties that also includes 13 safari camps and lodges in Africa. The boats are deliberately small: fewer guests means a more intimate journey and, often, access to places larger ships cannot reach.

Five boats, five characters

Each boat has its own personality. Zein Nile Chateau is a six-suite, wood-clad recreation of the 19th-century dahabiyas that sailed Egypt’s waterways for centuries, with Galala marble in the suites and room for just 12. Sun Boat III evokes the glamour of 1930s Egypt with four-poster beds and wooden shutters. Nile Adventurer has wraparound circular windows and 30 cabins and suites, and Sun Boat IV has 38, with a sun deck and pool on top. Nile Seray, launching in 2026, is the newest and largest, with 32 suites for 64 guests, a spa treatment area, a modern gym and works by Egyptian artists.

Fewer guests, more access, and Egyptologists as your guides.

The Egyptologists

What sets an A&K journey apart is the guiding. Expert Egyptologists lead every excursion, from Luxor’s temples to Aswan, and entrance fees, transport and port charges are part of the fare. Back on board, afternoon tea is served each day.

Into the Amazon

In 2025 A&K launched Pure Amazon in Peru. The boat has just 12 suites and cabins for a maximum of 22 guests, Italian design with Peruvian textiles, a spa pool, massage room and gym, and a staff-to-guest ratio of one to one. Twice a day, nine-seat motorised skiffs take you into the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve in search of pink river dolphins, manatees, black caimans and squirrel monkeys.

Travel that gives back

Through A&K Philanthropy, the company supports projects in the places its boats sail: the Funtasia after-school programme in Luxor, the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation in Aswan, and, in Peru, the Kukama Kukamiria community of Nueva Arica, whose tourism association hosts Pure Amazon guests.

Our advice:

Our advice: on the Nile, choose by character. The dahabiya Zein Nile Chateau is the most romantic, Sun Boat IV the classic, and Nile Seray the most contemporary. In Peru, go between June and November for wildlife on foot, or between December and May to explore the flooded forest by skiff.

Why it's on our list

  • A&K travelling since 1962
  • Five Nile riverboats
  • A six-suite dahabiya
  • Pure Amazon, launched 2025
  • Every boat can be chartered
